01 — The Challenge

Where the project began

Coach required a 5-metre oversized sneaker prop for an outdoor window installation in Tokyo.
The core engineering challenge: designing a custom stainless steel internal armature capable of load-bearing both the fibreglass shoe shell and a miniature car prop in an outdoor environment — while achieving a weatherproof construction and a photorealistic vintage leather grain finish at monumental scale.

From sketch to proposal

The concept centred on replicating Coach’s iconic Soho Sneaker at 10× scale — preserving every grain, stitch, and worn-in character of the original. A high-gloss automotive finish on the car prop was chosen to contrast with the matte vintage texture of the shoe, echoing Coach’s playful luxury aesthetic.

  • Fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) for the shoe shell — lightweight yet rigid enough for outdoor conditions.

  • Plywood base for structural grounding.

  • Steel (SS) internal armature to transfer load safely from shoe body to base.

① 3D files designed with real-like grain surface detail.
② Oversized shoe and car 3D-printed from confirmed files.
③ Steel internal structure engineered inside a plywood base for outdoor load-bearing.
④ Vintage grain hand-finishing applied to shoe body; high-gloss automotive paint applied to car exterior.

03 — The Craft

The making

The surface finish replicates Coach’s authentic vintage leather grain through 3D-modelled texture mapping and hand-applied finishing techniques. The miniature car prop is finished in high-gloss automotive-grade paint, creating a deliberate visual contrast. An elliptical plywood base houses a custom stainless steel internal structure engineered to carry the full load of all display components.

All outdoor-facing surfaces are fully sealed and weatherproofed for exterior.

04 — The Outcome

The final presentation

The installation was received with strong approval from the Coach brand team. Spanning approximately 8 m in length and 5 m in height, the piece became a centrepiece of the Tokyo store window, delivering the monumental, tactile presence the brief demanded.
